In-scene text labels let you place text directly in the 3D scene, next to the geometry it describes - dimensions, part names, callouts, notes. Labels come in two styles, and Modelup ships a dedicated Grasshopper component for each.

Need dimension lines, or text baked into the model geometry so it exports with the mesh? Use the geometry-based approach instead — see Dimensions & annotations (text as geometry).

Two label styles: 2D and 3D

The same text can be shown in one of two ways. Which one you choose depends on whether the label should behave like a floating pin or like text painted onto the model.

2D label (billboard) 3D label (plane)
Behaviour Always faces the camera Lies flat on a plane in the scene
Size Constant on-screen size (pixels), independent of zoom Real-world size, scales with the geometry
Anchored by A single point A plane (position + orientation)
Analogy A map pin / Rhino Dot Text painted onto a surface
Extra options Chip background, facing vector —

The two Grasshopper components

Both components output a Text Label, which you feed into the Create glTF component together with your geometry.

Create 2D Text Label

A chip/pill that always faces the camera at a constant on-screen size. Only the anchor point's position is used.

Input Description
Point (P) Anchor position of the label.
Text (T) Text to display.
Font Size (S) On-screen size in pixels, constant regardless of zoom. Optional — leave empty to use the viewer's default. Typically 12–24 px.
Color (C) Text color. Optional — defaults to the viewer's theme text color (near-black).
Font Weight (W) Thin â€Ļ Normal â€Ļ Black. Optional.
Chip Background (B) Optional pill drawn behind the text: Light, Dark, None, or System (follows the viewer's light/dark mode).
Justification (J) Which corner/edge of the text box sits on the anchor point. Defaults to BottomLeft.
Normal (N) Optional facing vector. When set, the label shows only while the camera is on this vector's side and hides once it moves to the opposite side.

Create 3D Text Label

Text laid flat onto a plane in the scene. It scales and tilts with the geometry, like text painted on a surface.

Input Description
Plane (P) Where the text sits and how it is oriented. The origin anchors the text; the plane's axes decide which way it faces and reads.
Text (T) Text to display.
Text Height (H) Letter height in the model's real-world units. Must be greater than 0.
Color (C) Text color. Optional — defaults to the viewer's theme text color.
Font Weight (W) Thin â€Ļ Normal â€Ļ Black. Optional.
Justification (J) Which corner/edge of the text box is pinned to the plane origin. Defaults to BottomLeft.

Optional style inputs (Font Size, Color, Font Weight, Chip Background) that are left empty are simply omitted, and the viewer falls back to its own defaults. This keeps labels consistent across a configurator unless you deliberately override a value.
